Developmental Services

The Developmental Support Services Program was established to assist adults diagnosed with a developmental disability to live independently in the community.

The goal of the program is to provide a service that will enable adults to become full participating members in the life of the community. Services provided are determined by the program participant based upon their personal goals.

The Developmental Support Services Program has two main components:

Adult Protective Services Program

The Adult Protective Services Program provides supports to individuals with a developmental disability who either live independently or are planning to live on their own in the community.

Our Adult Protective Service Workers can provide you with the following types of support:

  • Case Management
  • Advocacy
  • Emotional Support
  • Crisis Management
Case Management

Our Adult Protective Service Workers will assist you in establishing your life goals and help you develop a plan to achieve them.

  • Liaising and linking with community partners
  • Assisting in accessing services
  • Coordinating medical appointments

Through the use of advocacy, emotional support, crisis management, and lifeskills training, we strive to enhance your quality of life.

Advocacy

Our program will support and empower you to make your own choices and advocate for you if you would like help. We may be able to help with situations such as:

  • A disagreement with family/support system
  • Difficulty accessing social & educational services
  • Difficulty with accessing adequate medical, psychiatric or dental care
  • Problems securing accommodations, programs or employment
  • A conflict with the law

Emotional Support

Our case managers can provide support when you are faced with an emotional crisis.

We will help you with:

  • Stressful or unexpected life changes
  • Understanding your options and rights before making a decision
  • Community appointments and assessments
  • Coordinating medical appointments
  • Connecting you to additional supports that may help you get through a difficult time

Crisis Management

Our Adult Protective Service Workers will help you deal with significant life changing events such as:

  • Death of spouse, friend or caregiver
  • Change in accommodations (eviction)
  • Loss of job or vocational program
  • Change in financial situation
  • Involvement with the Children's Aid Society
  • Medical emergencies

FAQ's - Specialized Services

There is no cost for this program. However, you do have to be living independently or in the process of moving out on your own. If you would like to be referred to our APSW Program, please call Developmental Services Ontario (1-855-376-6673).

There is no time limit on how long you can receive our services. Once your skill level improves, you may not require us as often. Our service levels may change over time as you become more independent.

This depends on your current skill level and what skills you would like to acquire. Your Adult Protective Service Worker will meet with you to discuss your needs and develop a plan to share with our Life Skills Trainers. Most of our clients receiving Life Skills supports have a worker meet with them.

The Life Skills Program works in conjunction with our Adult Protective Service Program to provide you with additional teaching supports to help you learn new skills.

Our Life Skill Trainers can assist with:

  • Budgeting
  • Community Orientation and bus training
  • Meal preparation and grocery shopping
  • Tips to improve your personal hygiene
  • Improving your social skills
  • Safety awareness
  • Coping with changes
